National Museums of Liverpool

Working with a multi-disciplinary design team, including BIG, JA Projects, Poor Collective and Hilson Moran, we delivered Sankofa Docks, a pop-up installation that demonstrated our approach to the transformation of Liverpool’s waterfront.

The Sankofa Docks (a temporary structure) was conceived and delivered as part of the National Museums of Liverpool’s (NML) Waterfront Transformation competition, which was tasked with finding a diverse design team to redesign the public realm that borders the Museum of Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum.

For Stage 2 of the competition, the shortlisted teams were asked to explore how they would link storytelling, heritage, community, connectivity, and commercial income to create a cohesive visitor experience and catalyst for social and environmental improvements in the area, whilst working through a process of co-design.

Beyond the Box delivered a series of engagement workshops to ensure the temporary structure was designed and activated in partnership with local communities from across Liverpool, including a collaboration and commission with Capoeira For All, who brought their networks together to amplify the voices of the local community and who delivered a special performance at the Sankofa Docks installation. We commissioned a local emerging producer Josh Ramsden, who worked with Peter Adjaye to create a soundscape at the installation which captured and played the voices of Liverpool’s Black community through speakers and a special collaboration with Scouse Flower House.
